Overview
Interface in Binera SharePoint Explorer
The main screen in BSE provides access to navigation, analysis, and information about users and permissions.
Part 1
Appearance settings
In this part of the solution, you can adjust how BSE is displayed on screen. These settings make it easier to choose a view that fits both your way of working and your screen size.
Here you can:
- switch between a light and dark background
- enable or disable tree view
At the top of this section, you will also find a question mark icon. This provides direct access to the user guide, with explanations of how the solution works in practice.
Tree view makes it easier to navigate the hierarchy of sites, folders, and files, especially in larger SharePoint environments.

Part 2
Navigation panel
The navigation panel shows the SharePoint structure and makes it possible to move between the different levels in the solution. It allows you to navigate in a way that resembles a traditional file structure.
The panel also allows you to filter which types of objects are shown in the structure.
- show or hide SharePoint sites
- show or hide Teams-connected sites
- hide files that only inherit permissions
This makes it easier to focus on relevant parts of the structure and reduce noise in the view.
The panel can display:
- SharePoint sites
- Teams-enabled sites
- Document libraries
- folders
- files
- pages
When you select a site, folder, or file, the item is highlighted in the structure. At the same time, the permissions that apply to the selected item are shown in the access panel.
BSE highlights objects with unique permissions by using dedicated icons in the structure.
- folders with unique permissions are shown with a dedicated marker
- documents with custom permissions are shown in the same way
This makes it easy to identify where access has been assigned directly to an object, and where the structure deviates from the level above.
To the right of a folder, you can also see how many objects exist in the area. If you want to display all folders and files, you can remove the option that hides files with inherited permissions only.

Part 3
Information, search and export
This part of the solution shows information about the selected item and provides access to search, filtering, and export of results.
When you select a site, folder, or file, the panel can display, among other things:
- the name of the selected site, folder, or file
- the name of the group governing the area
- a link to the item in SharePoint, if the user has access
If you select a site, you can also see whether the area is Teams-enabled, when it was created, and whether it is configured as public or private.
In the search field, you can search by name, email address, and role. The table can be sorted by all columns, and you can filter the view, for example, to show only users or specific roles.
Results can be exported to both JSON and CSV. This makes it easier to use the data for auditing, documentation, analysis in Excel, or further processing in other systems.

Information about the selected item
The panel shows details about the selected item, including its name, associated group, and a link to the item in SharePoint.
Search and filtering
You can search by name, email address, and role, and filter the view to gain a better overview of relevant users and groups.
Export
Results can be exported to CSV and JSON for further analysis, documentation, and processing in other systems.
Recursive permission report
This feature allows you to analyze permissions multiple levels down in the structure from a selected node, without manually navigating through each level.
You can start a recursive report by right-clicking a folder in the navigation panel and selecting: Generate Recursive Permission report from selected node.
The solution will then traverse the entire structure below the selected node and collect permission data.
Depending on the size of the structure, this process may take some time due to Microsoft API limitations (throttling), and it can generate a large amount of data.
Once the process is completed, you will receive an email with a link to download the resulting CSV file.

If you want to analyze activity over time, you can use the Analytics function.
Analytics provides insight into access and usage of documents and folders, including when they were accessed and by whom, within a selected period.
See Analytics โ activity and history for more information.
Part 4
Access panel
The access panel shows how access is configured for the item you have selected. Here you can see which groups have access, which users belong to those groups, and how the access has been assigned.
The panel provides, among other things, information about:
- which groups have access
- which users are members of those groups
- how the access has been assigned
Groups can be expanded directly in the view by clicking the arrow in front of the group name. This makes it easier to see which users actually have access through group membership.
By combining information from the navigation panel and the access panel, you get a complete understanding of how permissions are configured in SharePoint.

Analytics
Activity and history
If Analytics is installed in the Entra tenant, a dedicated button becomes available in the solution. This function makes it possible to analyze activity related to files and folders over time, including when they have been accessed and by whom.
Analytics can be used to:
- search activity data
- see who has accessed documents and folders
- analyze usage over a selected period
To use the function, select Start Date and End Date, and then search within the desired period.
The results provide an overview of activity within the selected time period, including access and usage of documents and folders.
The results can be sorted and exported to CSV for further analysis and documentation.
